ORLEN and InnoEnergy Partner for Renewable Hydrogen and eSAF in Europe

Key highlights
  • A new eSAF facility in Kuopio, Finland, aims for 50,000 tonnes per year by 2031.
  • The project received a €150 million tax incentive from Finland.
  • Five eSAF plants are planned across the Nordic region by 2040.
  • The collaboration focuses on renewable hydrogen, hydrogen derivatives, and SAF logistics.

Strategic Partnership for Renewable Energy

ORLEN has entered into strategic agreements with three Finnish clean energy developers, including an InnoEnergy-backed company, to enhance Europe's hydrogen and sustainable fuels value chain. Supported by Business Finland, this collaboration aims to accelerate the deployment of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives across Europe.

eSAF Production Facility in Finland

The partnership includes developing a large-scale electro-based Sustainable Aviation Fuel (eSAF) production facility in Kuopio, Finland, with a planned capacity of 50,000 tonnes per year by 2031. The project utilizes renewable hydrogen and biogenic CO₂ and has secured a €150 million tax incentive from the Finnish state, highlighting its strategic importance.

Expansion Plans Across the Nordic Region

Initiated by InnoEnergy, the venture aims to establish a replicable industrial model with plans to deploy five eSAF plants across the Nordic region by 2040. This initiative supports Europe's aviation decarbonization and energy sovereignty objectives.

Focus on Logistics and Infrastructure

ORLEN will collaborate with Finnish partners to define future supply models for renewable hydrogen, hydrogen derivatives, and Sustainable Aviation Fuels, as well as the logistics for transporting these fuels from Finland to Poland. ORLEN also plans to leverage its expertise in underground gas storage and energy infrastructure to support hydrogen transmission and storage, enhancing supply security and promoting the adoption of renewable hydrogen in transport and industry.
