OMV Petrom advances EUR 560m SAF/HVO unit at Petrobrazi
- EUR 560 million investment to build a sustainable fuels production unit at Petrobrazi.
- Unit capacity 250,000 tonnes per year to produce SAF and renewable diesel (HVO) from vegetable fats and used cooking oils using green hydrogen.
- Construction started in 2025; foundations (≈20,000 m³ concrete) and major equipment up to 60 m high are installed; commissioning estimated for 2028.

Project scope and capacity
OMV Petrom is developing a EUR 560 million sustainable fuels production unit at the Petrobrazi refinery. The new unit is designed to produce 250,000 tonnes per year of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel (HVO).
Feedstocks and product flexibility
The unit will transform vegetable fats and used cooking oils into fuels similar to conventional ones using green hydrogen. The facility can adjust feedstocks and the final product mix between SAF, HVO, bio-naphtha and bio-LPG depending on market requirements and feedstock availability.
Emissions and timeline
These fuels are expected to deliver at least a 65% reduction in life-cycle CO₂ emissions compared with traditional fossil fuels. Construction works started in 2025; foundations have been completed (approximately 20,000 cubic metres of concrete) and key equipment including columns and reactors have been installed. Remaining work includes further equipment installation, tie-ins to existing refinery infrastructure and extensive testing ahead of commissioning, estimated for 2028.
Green hydrogen support
As part of the transition, modules for two electrolyzers with a combined capacity of 55 MW were delivered this year. Investment in the green hydrogen projects is around EUR 190 million.
