OMV Petrom raises Petrobrazi green hydrogen capacity to 55 MW with second 35 MW electrolyzer
- All seven 5 MW modules for the second 35 MW electrolyzer have been delivered and are being integrated.
- Combined with an existing 20 MW unit, Petrobrazi’s total green hydrogen capacity is 55 MW.
- The 35 MW project received approximately EUR 29 million in non-reimbursable financing through Romania’s PNRR.
- Estimated output: ~4,700 t/yr from the 35 MW unit and ~8,000 t/yr total to support refining and a 250,000 t/y SAF/HVO facility; fuels can cut lifecycle CO₂ by at least 65%.
Delivery and installation
All seven electrolysis modules (5 MW each) for the second 35 MW electrolyzer supplied by Neuman & Esser (Germany) have been delivered to the Petrobrazi refinery over the past two months and are being integrated into the refinery infrastructure.
Capacity and production
Together with an already delivered 20 MW unit, Petrobrazi now has 55 MW of installed green hydrogen capacity. The 35 MW project is estimated to produce approximately 4,700 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, with the two projects totaling an estimated ~8,000 tonnes per year.
Use in refining and SAF/HVO project
Green hydrogen will be used in refinery processes, including for the new SAF/HVO unit under construction at Petrobrazi, a 250,000-tonne-per-year facility. The SAF and HVO fuels, produced from vegetable and waste oils, are compatible with existing infrastructure and can reduce CO₂ emissions by at least 65% over their life cycle.
Financing and contractors
Construction works, logistics, component manufacturing and module assembly at Petrobrazi are carried out by Kraftanlagen Romania in partnership with local suppliers. The 35 MW project benefits from approximately EUR 29 million in non-reimbursable financing through Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
