Project Overview
The ECLUSE steam network at the Port of Antwerp is now operational, supplying steam generated from waste incineration to six chemical companies. This initiative is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 100,000 tonnes annually, contributing significantly to Flemish climate targets.
Technical Details
The steam is transported at a constant pressure of 40 bar and a temperature of 400°C through a 5-kilometer network, mostly above ground. A condensate pipe returns hot water to Indaver for reuse, also heating DP World's offices along the way.
Investment and Partnerships
The project, a collaboration between Indaver, SLECO, Fluvius, and others, received a 10 million euro ecology aid from the Flemish Government, with a total investment of 30 million euros. The network supplies steam to companies like Ineos Phenol, ADPO, LANXESS Belgium, Monument Chemical, and Ashland Specialties Belgium.
Recognition and Impact
ECLUSE has already received several awards, including the Sustainability Award in 2016 and the Belgian Energy and Environment Award in 2017. The project exemplifies a successful heating chain as envisioned in the Flemish Heating Plan, showcasing innovation in energy transition and sustainability.
