Petrobras: FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão hits 180,000 bpd peak in Mero pre-salt

Key highlights
  • FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão reached 180,000 barrels per day peak production.
  • The unit is planned to connect 12 wells (six oil producers and six water/gas injectors) and currently has five producers and three injectors online.
  • Mero asset averaged about 740 mbpd in the second quarter of 2026 before Alexandre de Gusmão’s peak.
  • Mero employs the PRM seabed seismic monitoring system and will receive HISEP® high‑pressure submarine separation for CO₂‑rich gas reinjection.

Peak production

The FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão, the fifth installed in the Mero field, reached peak production of 180,000 barrels of oil per day. Petrobras highlighted the milestone as confirmation of overcoming technical challenges and of its adopted strategies, according to Renata Baruzzi, director of Engineering, Technology and Innovation.

Wells and connections

The FPSO, chartered from SBM Offshore, is planned to connect to 12 wells — six oil producers and six water or gas injectors alternately. To date five oil producers and three injectors are connected and operating.

Field performance

The Mero asset averaged about 740 mbpd in the second quarter of 2026 prior to Alexandre de Gusmão’s peak. Sylvia Anjos, Petrobras director of Exploration and Production, said the unit’s peak indicates a trajectory of increasing operational efficiency across assets.

Monitoring and technology

Mero hosts the Permanent Reservoir Monitoring (PRM) seabed infrastructure, an extensive network of sensors and optical instruments aimed at improving production management and maximizing reservoir recovery. The field will also receive HISEP®, Petrobras’ patented high‑pressure separation technology currently in qualification, enabling submarine separation of oil and associated CO₂‑rich gas for direct reinjection into the reservoir.

Consortium

Operations of the unitized Mero field are conducted by a consortium operated by Petrobras in partnership with Shell Brasil, TotalEnergies, CNPC, CNOOC and Pré‑Sal Petróleo S.A. (PPSA), which manages the production sharing contract on behalf of the Union.
