Project Overview
ECLUSE, a public-private steam network, plans to expand its operations to the right bank of the river Scheldt. The expansion, known as ECLUSE 2, involves transporting steam to Evonik through a tunnel under the Scheldt. The Flemish Government has allocated 9.58 million euros in subsidies for this energy-saving initiative.
Environmental Impact
The project aims to significantly reduce CO2 emissions by at least 100,000 tons annually, as Evonik will use less fossil fuel in its chemical processes. The steam provided is 50% biogenic, contributing to the production of 'green heat'.
Infrastructure Development
The construction of a tunnel under the Scheldt is essential for connecting the waste-to-energy site on the left bank with Evonik on the right bank. This connection will facilitate a sustainable industrial cluster and allow other companies to join in the future.
Contribution to Energy Goals
ECLUSE 2 will play a crucial role in meeting the National Energy and Climate Plan's objectives for 2020-2030. It is expected to contribute significantly to the growth of heat networks and green heat production targets.
