Event and access

Indaver and Sleco open their Doel site to the public for Voka Open Business Day under the theme “Waste, there's music in it!”. Visitors follow self-paced themed routes—Power Rock, Heavy Metal, Industrial Trance, Disco Light, Wood Stok and Back Stage—starting from Festival Boulevard, with music, food and live performances on site.

Energy from waste

Two types of combustion plants are on display: grate-fired incinerators that mainly process household residual waste and similar commercial waste, and fluidised-bed incinerators for non-recyclable commercial waste and sludge. Heat from treatment is used to produce steam that can be converted to electricity or supplied to port companies via ECLUSE. Wood Stok features E-Wood, which recovers energy from waste wood no longer suitable for material recycling.

Turning waste into raw materials

Visitors on the Heavy Metal route will see bottom ash washing, screening and sorting to recover iron, copper and aluminium, and mineral fractions that can be reused—coarser granules, for example, in concrete products. Indaver markets certified bottom-ash granules as Circulith. Disco Light highlights lamp processing (around 30 million lamps annually) to reclaim glass, plastics and metals. Small amounts of silver or gold can also be found in bottom ash, and gold panning will be offered.

Views, safety and practical info

The Back Stage route leads to the top of the landfill with views across the Port of Antwerp and explains how non-recyclable or non-thermally treatable waste is safely disposed of. Children aged 3–6 have supervised childcare; those aged six and over may visit the plant with an accompanying adult. Voka Open Business Day runs 10:00–17:00 on 4 October 2026 at Molenweg 5, 9130 Doel; a typical visit lasts about 1.5 hours and advance registration is required.
