Röhm opens Bay City MMA plant as LiMA technology reaches full industrial scale

Key highlights
  • LiMA technology is operating at full industrial scale worldwide for the first time at Röhm’s Bay City MMA plant.
  • The Bay City facility is the first C2‑based MMA production plant in North America, using ethylene and natural gas feedstocks.
  • The plant’s annual production capacity is 250,000 tonnes of MMA and it employs around 90 people.
  • Advent International has invested approximately USD 1.6 billion to support Röhm’s innovation and long‑term growth, including LiMA scale‑up.

Operational milestone

Röhm’s Bay City, Texas methyl methacrylate (MMA) plant has completed a structured ramp‑up and is operating LiMA technology at full industrial scale for the first time worldwide, with site tours held for customers, partners and officials.

Technology and investment

LiMA (Leading in ‘Leading in MethAcrylates’) was developed in Germany and transferred to the U.S. with support from investor Advent International, which has invested about USD 1.6 billion to back the company’s innovation and growth. Company leadership framed the plant as a strategic, long‑term investment to serve global and regional markets.

Capacity, sustainability and digital operations

The facility is designed for 250,000 tonnes per year of MMA, maximising yield while cutting energy and water use; LiMA reduces CO2 emissions by up to 42% versus conventional processes. Constructed wetlands support a near‑closed water cycle and the plant uses a daily‑updated digital twin for planning, predictive maintenance and dynamic simulations.

Supply chain and market reach

As the first C2‑based MMA plant in North America, Bay City relies on ethylene and natural gas feedstocks and anchors supply closer to end markets. MMA marketed under MERACRYL® will be distributed via a multimodal network—truck, rail and inland waterways—with tank and transloading terminals to improve regional logistics and reliability.
