Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) is a Swedish state-owned mining and minerals group and a leading European producer of high‑grade iron ore. Founded in 1890, the company operates major underground mines in Kiruna, Malmberget and Svappavaara in northern Sweden, supplying iron ore pellets and fines primarily to the steel industry. Products are shipped via rail links to the ports of Luleå (Sweden) and Narvik (Norway).
Through LKAB Minerals, the group also supplies industrial minerals and iron oxides used in applications such as construction materials, energy systems, water treatment and polymer formulations. LKAB is advancing projects to recover valuable elements from mining side streams, including apatite-derived phosphorus (for mineral fertilizers), rare earth elements and fluorine, aiming to develop regional processing capacity and more circular material flows. The company is a partner in initiatives to decarbonize ironmaking, including technologies for fossil‑free sponge iron and lower‑emission pellet production, with long‑term climate targets aligned to Sweden’s 2045 goals.
