Hybrit Development AB

About Hybrit

Hybrit Development AB (Hybrit) is a Swedish joint venture established by SSAB, LKAB, and Vattenfall to develop and industrialize fossil-free iron and steelmaking. The company’s core focus is hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron ore (DRI), replacing coking coal with hydrogen produced from fossil-free electricity to create sponge iron that can be processed into steel with radically lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Hybrit leads research, pilot, and demonstration projects in Sweden, including hydrogen production and DRI facilities associated with the steel value chain. Its work covers process integration with electric arc furnaces, optimization of energy use and hydrogen supply, and the technical and economic groundwork needed for large-scale deployment. By advancing hydrogen-based reduction technologies and related infrastructure, Hybrit aims to enable a transition to low-emission steel production for heavy industry.
