Southern Energy Renewables, Axens Sign MoU to Advance SAF in Louisiana

Key highlights
  • Southern Energy Renewables and Axens signed a non-binding MoU to collaborate on biomass-to-fuel projects focused on SAF and CO2 capture.
  • Southern will lead overall project development: site work, permitting, feedstock and offtake engagement, and coordination with local stakeholders.
  • Axens will act as licensor for CO2 capture/conditioning and SAF production technologies to advance a de-risked, bankable pathway, starting with the Louisiana facility.
  • $SAF is an experimental digital token Southern plans to use to track and visualize production data, linking issuance and retirement to measured output, beginning at the pilot plant.

Partnership scope

Southern Energy Renewables and Axens signed a non-binding MoU to collaborate on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and related low-carbon fuel projects, initially targeting Southern’s Louisiana biomass-to-fuels facility that aims to convert regional wood-waste into green methanol and carbon-negative SAF at scale.

Roles and project focus

Under the agreement Southern will lead overall project development including site work, permitting, feedstock and offtake engagement and stakeholder coordination; Axens will act as licensor of record for key technologies across the value chain, including CO2 capture and conditioning and SAF production, with the objective of advancing a de-risked, bankable pathway and evaluating expansion to other regions.

Digital tracking pilot

Southern also introduced an experimental digital token, $SAF, intended as a production data layer to track and visualize outputs starting at the pilot plant and potentially scaling to the flagship project; the framework links token issuance and retirement to measured output and operational data to improve traceability and operational insight without changing fuel commercialization or accounting.
