Overview

Carbon2Chem® marks ten years of cross‑industry research that treats CO₂ and components of blast furnace gas as raw materials. The project assembles more than twenty partners from industry and academia, including thyssenkrupp companies and institutes such as the Max‑Planck‑Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion and Fraunhofer UMSICHT, and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Aerospace.

Sector coupling and the Technikum

Launched with the Technikum in Duisburg in 2016, the platform integrates steel, energy and chemical industries to convert metallurgical gases into feedstocks for methanol, ammonia and synthetic fuels. The Technikum has served as the bridge between basic research and industrial application, supplying experimental data under real‑world conditions.

From demonstration to industrial perspective

Processes developed in the project are being prepared for scale‑up and new business models along sustainable value chains. Partners say carbon recycling strengthens economic resilience and that close collaboration between basic and applied research and industry demonstrates the feasibility of transforming energy‑intensive sectors.

Next steps: hydrogen and SAF

The site’s pilot electrolyser operated by thyssenkrupp nucera will be supported by an additional electrolysis hall due next year to secure hydrogen supply. In parallel, construction of a Sustainable Aviation Fuel plant in Duisburg has been approved to extend CO₂ utilisation to aviation fuels.
