PETRONAS advances sustainable fuels with Mercedes‑AMG PETRONAS F1
- The FIA mandated advanced sustainable fuels for 2026 and PETRONAS’ ASF is used by the Mercedes‑AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team in the sport’s first season of such fuels.
- PETRONAS Syntium engine oils and Tutela fluids were developed in step with ASF to meet higher thermal loads, greater electrical demand and new operating temperatures for modern hybrid power units.
- PETRONAS and the Mercedes‑AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team have partnered for 16 years.
- PETRONAS is developing biorefinery infrastructure to produce SAF, HVO and bio‑naphtha, with deployments including HVO100 for F1 logistics, SAF for aviation partners and B24 marine blends.
On‑track application
PETRONAS’ Advanced Sustainable Fuel (ASF) is powering the Mercedes‑AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team in Formula One’s first season of advanced sustainable fuels, supporting the team’s integrated hybrid power unit with Fluid Technology Solutions™.
Regulatory backdrop
The FIA has mandated advanced sustainable fuels for 2026 as part of the sport’s commitment to net zero carbon emissions by 2030. ASF is tailored to modern hybrid power units, with energy density and combustion behaviour specified for the engine it serves.
Fluids and partnership
Complementary Syntium engine oils and Tutela fluids were formulated alongside the fuel to address higher thermal loads, increased electrical demand and new operating temperatures. The collaboration between PETRONAS and the Mercedes‑AMG PETRONAS team spans 16 years and is cited by team leadership as central to performance and innovation.
Biobased value chain and commercial rollout
PETRONAS is developing biorefinery infrastructure to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and bio‑naphtha. Deployment is already under way through HVO100 for Formula One logistics, SAF for aviation partners and B24 blends for marine bunkering, and ASF development is informing commercial fuels such as Primax in Malaysia and Brazil.
