Agreement and objective
Eni and PETRONAS signed a Feasibility Agreement to evaluate development of high‑performance bio‑gasoline starting from the Ecofining™ technology Eni uses for HVO production. The study will assess technical, market and sustainability profiles as well as performance levels for use in motorsport competitions and potential subsequent commercial products.
Roles and expertise
Eni will contribute experience in sustainable energy solutions and biofuel production at its Enilive biorefineries, including HVO diesel and SAF, and in developing innovative bio‑gasoline; Enilive HVO diesel is currently available at more than 1,700 service stations across Europe. PETRONAS will contribute fuel technology expertise spanning fossil and high‑performance sustainable fuels for combustion engines, plus experience in advanced product development.
Industrial context and capacity
Alongside the agreement, PETRONAS and partners are developing Pengerang Biorefinery Sdn. Bhd. in Johor, which is expected by the second half of 2028 to process up to 650,000 tonnes per year of renewable feedstocks to produce SAF, HVO diesel and bio‑naphtha. Eni and PETRONAS also established Searah, a 50:50 joint venture combining operations in Indonesia and Malaysia that includes a portfolio of 19 gas production and development assets.
