PETRONAS logs three successes in Suriname Block 52

Key highlights
  • Caiman‑1 and SAC‑1 exploration wells plus Roystonea‑2 appraisal were successful in Block 52.
  • The three results bring PETRONAS’ tally in Suriname to eight successful wells unlocking over one billion barrels of oil equivalent.
  • PETRONAS operates Block 52 with an 80% interest; Paradise Oil (Staatsolie) holds the remaining 20%.
  • Sloanea gas was declared commercial in November 2025 and a final investment decision is targeted by end‑2026.

New discoveries and appraisal

PETRONAS recorded two exploration discoveries (Caiman‑1 and Swartzia Aspasia Complex‑1) and a successful appraisal (Roystonea‑2) in offshore Block 52. These add to previous results and bring the total number of successful wells in Suriname to eight, collectively unlocking more than one billion barrels of oil equivalent of recoverable resources.

Well results and reservoir performance

Caiman‑1 was drilled in 90 metres of water to 5,065 metres total depth and encountered multiple oil‑bearing Cretaceous sandstone intervals. SAC‑1, drilled in 610 metres of water to 4,560 metres total depth, intersected gas‑bearing sandstones with drill stem testing showing strong gas deliverability. Roystonea‑2, drilled about 7 kilometres north of Roystonea‑1, confirmed the lateral extent of oil‑bearing reservoirs and delivered strong oil productivity in DSTs.

Ownership, regional context and development timeline

PETRONAS operates Block 52 with an 80% participating interest; Paradise Oil Company N.V. (a Staatsolie subsidiary) holds 20%. PETRONAS holds interests in eight offshore Suriname blocks (9, 10, 48, 52, 53, 63, 64 and 66). The results support multiple potential oil and gas developments and reinforce Suriname’s position as an emerging deepwater hub in the Suriname‑Guyana basin. The Sloanea gas field was declared commercial in November 2025 and a final investment decision on its development is targeted by the end of 2026.

Local commitments

As part of its engagement in Suriname, PETRONAS awarded scholarships to seven Surinamese students who have begun studies at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS in Malaysia.
