Moeve and ENSO partner to decarbonize industrial cogeneration with biomass and renewable gases

Key highlights
  • The companies will transition fossil-fuel cogeneration in chemicals, paper and food sectors to advanced biomass-based heat and power systems.
  • They will develop renewable gases including conversion of biogas to biomethane and potential e-fuels (RFNBOs) produced from biogenic CO2.
  • Moeve may act as offtaker for new green molecules while ENSO provides renewable generation and biogenic CO2 capture, demonstrated at its Garray (Soria) biopower plant.
  • The alliance aims to deliver bankable projects that cut emissions, generate savings and capitalise on upcoming cogeneration auctions in Spain.

Partnership scope

Moeve and ENSO will collaborate to transition industrial facilities that currently rely on coal, natural gas and other fossil fuels for cogeneration to lower-carbon energy models. Target sectors include chemicals, paper and board, and food and beverage — industries with high steam and thermal demand where electrification is often infeasible.

Technologies and commercial roles

The alliance covers advanced biomass heat and power, conversion of biogas plants to biomethane, and potential production of e-fuels (RFNBOs) using biogenic CO2 captured at bioenergy facilities. Captured CO2 can be turned into new feedstock; Moeve may participate as a potential offtaker of the green molecules while ENSO supplies renewable generation and biogenic carbon capture capabilities. ENSO has already integrated CO2 capture and upgrading at its Garray (Soria) biopower plant to produce 100% renewable food-grade CO2.

Competitiveness and project delivery

The partners position decarbonization as a driver of competitiveness, aiming to generate savings, reduce emissions and improve energy security. They propose bankable project structures and asset co-investment models so industrial clients can modernise generation assets and invest in efficiency without diverting resources from core business. ENSO highlighted its ability to invest in, build and operate large-scale bioenergy infrastructure, combined with Moeve’s energy-supply and green-molecule marketing capabilities.

Policy timing and market opportunity

The agreement comes ahead of planned cogeneration auctions in Spain and is designed to help industrial companies upgrade to more efficient, lower-carbon solutions by combining heat, power and renewable gases under the 'Moeve decarbonize' offering.
