Happy Cups made with Paques Biomaterials' Caleyda

Production milestone

Happy Cups has produced its first reusable festival cup using Caleyda®, a locally produced PHA, with the injection‑moulding carried out by H&P Moulding in Emmen. The trial replaces the company's previous reliance on commercially available PHA sourced from outside Europe.

Material status and approvals

Paques Biomaterials says the successful processing demonstrates Caleyda is ready for commercial application and meets the technical specifications required for reliable processing. “For us, this is an important validation that our material meets the technical specifications required for reliable processing,” says Joost Paques. Paques adds it is preparing the preliminary work toward food‑contact approval and aims to initiate approval procedures as soon as possible. Happy Cups commented that “PHA is an honest material and an excellent alternative to fossil‑based plastics.”

Collaboration and next steps

The cup was developed through the PHA Centre of Expertise, where the full PHA value chain—producers, compounders, injection moulders, designers, brand owners, entrepreneurs and researchers—meets monthly to exchange knowledge and accelerate innovation. The Centre describes the Happy Cup as a tangible example of what the collaboration can achieve and says several new product developments using locally produced PHA are already underway.
