Exolum to develop Avonmouth CO2 storage hub with Severnside Carbon

Key highlights
  • Exolum will form subsidiary Exolum 7CO2 to invest in and lead development of an Avonmouth CO2 storage and shipping terminal, with Tecnicas Reunidas as engineering partner and Severnside Carbon as adviser.
  • The terminal is planned to begin operations from 2031 and will be the UK's first large-scale CO2 hub designed for modular rail and ship transport.
  • Planned capacity is up to 6 million tonnes of CO2 per year, serving industry in southwest England, the Midlands and South Wales.
  • Severnside Carbon will continue developing capture-as-a-service opportunities and a regional sustainable aviation fuel investment alongside the terminal development.

Project overview

An agreement between Severnside Carbon and Exolum establishes Exolum 7CO2, a new Exolum subsidiary, to develop a CO2 storage and shipping terminal at Avonmouth Docks; Técnicas Reunidas will act as engineering partner and Severnside Carbon will serve as adviser.

Capacity and timeline

The terminal is designed for modular transport by rail and ship and is planned to begin operations from 2031, with a potential handling capacity of up to six million tonnes of CO2 per year.

Coverage and purpose

The hub aims to serve industry across southwest England, the Midlands and South Wales—areas currently outside the four UK clusters with government-backed CO2 infrastructure—and to provide open-access CO2 logistics to support decarbonisation of emitters and emerging projects such as data centres and sustainable aviation fuel developments.

Partners and next steps

Exolum will lead investment and integration with UK energy logistics; Severnside Carbon will continue developing capture-as-a-service opportunities and a regional sustainable aviation fuel investment while advising the terminal's development.
