Yara Sluiskil: Europe's largest industrial CCS begins operations

Project start and capacity
Yara's Sluiskil ammonia and fertiliser plant in Zeeland has started operations as the largest commercial carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in Europe. The facility is designed to capture and liquefy up to 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually from ammonia production.
Transport and storage
Captured CO₂ will be transported by ship and permanently stored at the Northern Lights facility under the Norwegian North Sea. The initiative is expected to store around 12 million tonnes of CO₂ over the next 15 years.
Funding and cooperation
The Northern Lights storage is funded by the EU under the Connecting Europe Facility. The cross-border project is a direct result of the EU–Norway Green Alliance signed in 2023 and combines private investment with public support across industry, EU member states and Norway.
Political backing and strategic aim
The inauguration was attended by senior EU and national figures, including Commissioner for Climate, Net-Zero and Clean Growth Wopke Hoekstra, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and Yara’s CEO Svein Tore Holsether. Commissioner Hoekstra said the project shows what is possible when innovation and cross-border cooperation deliver emissions reductions while strengthening industrial competitiveness.
