Project overview

Europe’s largest industrial carbon capture facility has been inaugurated at Yara’s Sluiskil ammonia and fertilizer plant. The installation captures and liquefies CO₂ from ammonia production and establishes the first complete cross-border value chain for capture, transport and permanent storage of industrial CO₂ in Europe.

Capacity and timeline

The plant can capture up to 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year. With the right framework conditions, the project is expected to capture and store approximately 12 million tonnes of CO₂ over the next 15 years.

Transport and storage chain

Liquefied CO₂ will be temporarily stored at Sluiskil, then loaded onto Northern Lights vessels and shipped to Øygarden, Norway. Northern Lights will inject and permanently store the CO₂ about 2,600 metres beneath the seabed.

Industrial and policy significance

Stakeholders present at the inauguration highlighted CCS as a tool to reduce emissions from energy‑intensive industries while maintaining production and jobs. The project is described as an example of cross‑border cooperation and shared infrastructure that can enable low‑carbon products and value chains across agriculture, industry, energy and shipping.
