Eni Ghana and Vitol sign MoUs for two Tano Basin acreages

Key highlights
  • MoUs cover GH WB 3 and GH WB 8 in the Tano Basin to progress the Petroleum Agreements.
  • The two acreages total approximately 2,100 square kilometres with water depths of 750–2,800 metres and are close to producing areas to leverage existing infrastructure.
  • Vitol discovered the field in 2009 that became OCTP and holds 35.6% of that project; Eni Ghana is operator with 44.4% and GNPC holds 20%.
  • Vitol is active across downstream and midstream in Ghana, supplying refinery feedstock and refined products and investing in storage and distribution via Vana Energy and Vivo Energy Ghana.

Deal and signatories

Eni Ghana, together with partner Vitol Upstream Tano Ltd, signed two Memoranda of Understanding with the Government of Ghana covering offshore acreages GH WB 3 and GH WB 8 in the Tano Basin. The MoUs were signed by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Jinapor, on behalf of the Government and were witnessed by executives from GNPC. The agreements are intended to pave the way for finalisation of the Petroleum Agreements and follow a Memorandum of Intent signed last year.

Acreage and position

The two blocks cover approximately 2,100 square kilometres with water depths ranging from 750 to 2,800 metres. Their proximity to established producing areas should enable existing infrastructure to be leveraged.

Vitol’s Ghana footprint

Vitol has been active in Ghana’s upstream since a 2009 discovery that subsequently became known as OCTP; it remains a 35.6% shareholder in that project. Eni Ghana is the operator with 44.4% and Ghana National Petroleum Corporation holds 20%. Vitol also participates in downstream and midstream activities, providing refinery feedstock and refined product supplies and investing in storage and distribution through affiliates Vana Energy and Vivo Energy Ghana.
