Eni Launches Biorefinery Project in Sannazzaro

Key highlights
  • The Sannazzaro biorefinery will process 550,000 tonnes/year of feedstock.
  • Production of HVO diesel and SAF-biojet is expected to start in 2028.
  • Eni aims to increase biorefining capacity to over 3 million tonnes by 2028.
  • Hydrogen will be sourced from existing plants for the biorefinery.

Project Overview

Eni has received approval to convert units at the Sannazzaro de’ Burgondi refinery into a biorefinery. The project includes converting the Hydrocracker unit using Ecofining™ technology and building a pre-treatment unit for waste and residues, the main feedstocks for HVO biofuels.

Production and Capacity

The biorefinery will have a processing capacity of 550,000 tonnes per year, producing HVO diesel and SAF-biojet. Hydrogen will be sourced from existing plants, and logistics infrastructure will be adapted for the new operations. Traditional fuel production will continue alongside the new biofuel production, expected to start in 2028.

Strategic Importance

The biorefinery will enhance product diversification without impacting the existing refinery's capacity. It will play a strategic role in supplying traditional jet fuel and SAF to north-west Italian airports, connected via pipeline to Milan Malpensa airport and other depots.

Future Plans

Eni plans to increase its biorefining capacity from 1.65 million tonnes per year to over 3 million by 2028 and over 5 million by 2030, with the potential to produce up to 2 million tonnes of SAF annually by 2030. Current biofuel production occurs at biorefineries in Venice, Gela, and a joint venture in Louisiana, with future sites planned in Livorno, Malaysia, South Korea, and Priolo, Sicily.
