Eni Confirms Biorefining Investment in Sannazzaro de’ Burgondi

Key highlights
  • Eni's Sannazzaro biorefinery will produce 550,000 tonnes/year by 2028.
  • The Priolo biorefinery will have a capacity of 500,000 tonnes/year.
  • Both biorefineries will produce HVO diesel and SAF-biojet.
  • Eni aims to increase biorefining capacity to over 5 million tonnes by 2030.

Biorefinery Conversion

Eni has approved the final investment decision to convert units of the Sannazzaro de’ Burgondi refinery into a biorefinery. This project will not impact the existing traditional fuel production but will add biofuel production from renewable raw materials.

Production Capacity

The new biorefinery will have the capacity to produce 550,000 tonnes per year of feedstock, with flexibility to produce both HVO diesel and SAF-biojet. The hydrogen needed will be supplied by existing plants, and infrastructure will be adapted to support the new production setup.

Priolo Biorefinery

The Priolo biorefinery, part of Versalis’ transformation plan, will have a capacity of 500,000 tonnes per year. It will replace the cracking plant that ceased operations last year and will also produce HVO diesel and SAF-biojet.

Future Plans

Eni aims to increase its biorefining capacity from the current 1.65 million tonnes per year to over 3 million by 2028 and over 5 million by 2030, with the potential to produce up to 2 million tonnes of SAF by 2030.
