Alfa Laval to supply heat exchangers for Saipem-built Stockholm Exergi BECCS plant
- Plant expected to begin operations in 2028 and will capture, liquify and permanently store up to 800,000 tonnes CO₂ annually.
- Alfa Laval will supply Ziepack gas–gas interchanger and multiple plate-and-frame process heat exchangers.
- Recovered heat will be returned to the existing district heating system to support carbon removal targets.
- Equipment package was selected by Saipem as part of its EPC contract for the Stockholm Exergi BECCS facility.
Project overview
Stockholm Exergi is building a large-scale BECCS facility at its biomass combined heat and power plant to capture CO₂ from combustion of biogenic fuels. The project aims to become net-negative and, when fully operational, will capture, liquify and permanently store up to 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year. Operations are expected to start in 2028.
Scope of supply
As part of Saipem’s EPC contract, Alfa Laval has been selected to deliver core heat-transfer equipment. The scope includes a Ziepack gas–gas interchanger and multiple plate-and-frame process heat exchangers that are integral to the capture process and designed to maximise heat recovery and system efficiency.
Energy recovery and system impact
The capture and liquefaction steps require substantial energy; reclaiming heat via Alfa Laval’s exchangers will feed back into Stockholm Exergi’s district heating network. Project stakeholders say this energy recovery improves the commercial viability of capture and supports the plant’s carbon removal objectives.
Contractual and strategic context
The equipment selection under Saipem’s EPC contract positions the facility as one of the world’s largest for permanent storage of biogenic CO₂ and contributes to Sweden’s climate neutrality goals and the EU’s broader climate strategy.
