Alfa Laval to supply electrolyzer cooling for Moeve’s Onuba H2 project

Key highlights
  • Initial electrolysis capacity 300 MW with an option to add 105 MW.
  • Facility expected to produce 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
  • Alfa Laval to deliver 60 heat exchangers for balance-of-plant, electrolyzer and gas cooling.
  • Onuba H2 is the industrial anchor of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley and is recognised as a Project of Common Interest by the European Commission.

Project overview

The Onuba H2 project at La Rábida Energy Park in Huelva will be the largest electrolyser plant in Southern Europe, with an initial electrolysis capacity of 300 MW and an option to expand by 105 MW. The facility is expected to produce 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually and serves as the industrial anchor for the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley.

Scope of supply

Alfa Laval was selected to supply heat transfer equipment to project lead Moeve, covering balance-of-plant cooling, electrolyser cooling and gas cooling. The contracted scope comprises 60 Alfa Laval heat exchangers designed for large-scale renewable hydrogen production.

Strategic significance

The Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley has been recognised by the European Commission as a Project of Common Interest, which supports access to public grants and subsidies. Renewable hydrogen from Onuba H2 aims to help decarbonise hard-to-electrify sectors such as heavy transport and intensive industry, while leveraging Andalusia’s renewable resources, infrastructure and strategic location to advance Europe’s energy transition.
