Uniper Chooses Plug for 100MW Electrolyzer at Rotterdam Maasvlakte Plant

At a glance
  • Uniper plans to commission 100 MW of Plug electrolysis capacity by 2026, expanding to 500 MW by 2030.
  • The Rotterdam Harbor area emitted 23.4 Mton CO2 in 2021.
  • Plug will deliver 10 prefabricated PEM electrolyzer arrays for the H2Maasvlakte project.
  • The FEED study is supported by Topsector Energie subsidies from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate.

Project Overview

Uniper has selected Plug Power to design the electrolyzer technology for its Maasvlakte site at the Port of Rotterdam. The project aims to commission 100 MW of Plug electrolysis capacity by 2026, with plans to expand to 500 MW by 2030.

Decarbonization Efforts

The Rotterdam Harbor area, including Maasvlakte, is the largest carbon-emitting industrial cluster in the Netherlands, emitting 23.4 Mton CO2 in 2021. Decarbonizing this area is crucial for the Netherlands to achieve its net-zero target by 2050.

Technology and Implementation

Under the agreement, Plug will deliver 10 prefabricated PEM electrolyzer arrays for Uniper’s H2Maasvlakte project. The electrolyzer technology will be manufactured in the European Union and the United States.

Support and Funding

The H2Maasvlakte project is part of the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study conducted by Uniper with Technip Energies. The study is supported by Topsector Energie subsidies from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate.
