Uniper advances NorthStarH2 into FEED with AFRY, Carbon Clean, Siemens Energy and Topsoe

FEED contracts
Uniper has signed contracts with AFRY, Carbon Clean, Siemens Energy and Topsoe to begin the Front‑End Engineering Design (FEED) phase for the NorthStarH2 e‑methanol project in Östersund.
Scope and budget
The contracts are worth more than SEK 100 million in total and the FEED work will run for approximately one year. Suppliers will provide engineering expertise for electrolysis, carbon capture, methanol synthesis and purification.
Plant output and inputs
NorthStarH2 will use renewable electricity and biogenic carbon dioxide to produce fossil‑free e‑methanol, with planned annual production of approximately 115,000 tonnes. The e‑methanol is intended to replace fossil fuels in sectors such as transport and the chemical industry.
Project schedule and permitting
Uniper plans a final investment decision in 2028 and currently schedules commissioning to begin in 2031. The company intends to submit its environmental permit application in autumn 2026.
