Uniper and Biotrend assess Turkish biomethane for European markets

Deal scope

Uniper and Turkish energy company Biotrend Enerji have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to assess production and potential export of biomethane from Türkiye to European markets. The partners will explore converting Biotrend’s existing waste‑based biogas plants to produce renewable gas. The MoU covers the initial project‑development phase and does not constitute an investment or offtake decision.

Resource and technical focus

Biotrend, part of Doğanlar Holding, is a major Turkish waste‑management and landfill operator whose current portfolio offers an estimated biomethane production potential of around 1.4 terawatt‑hours per year. Türkiye’s untapped biomethane potential is cited as up to 50 TWh/yr. The partners will assess whether existing biogas‑to‑power facilities can be upgraded to produce biomethane from organic waste.

Export route and conditions

Subject to necessary Turkish regulation and European certification, biomethane could be injected into the Turkish gas grid and transported toward Greece or Bulgaria for import into the EU. Uniper will contribute experience in sourcing and commercialising renewable gases, and in sustainability standards, certification and regulation.

Context for Uniper

Uniper frames the cooperation as part of its strategy to expand renewable and low‑carbon gas supplies. The company has already secured future supplies from three Spanish plants and operates an integrated biomethane‑to‑bio‑LNG supply chain using existing infrastructure at the Gate terminal in Rotterdam. The MoU was signed in the presence of Hendrik Wüst and Hakan Göral.
