Key highlights
- TotalEnergies and Holcim inaugurated the floating solar plant in Obourg, Belgium on 20 March 2026.
- Installed capacity is 31 MW with annual generation of 30 GWh.
- The plant supplies onsite self-consumption for Holcim’s industrial facilities and is Europe’s largest floating solar dedicated to self-consumption.
- More than 700 meters of horizontal directional drilling connect the floating array to the electrical substation on a rehabilitated former chalk quarry lake.
Inauguration and site
On 20 March 2026 TotalEnergies and Holcim inaugurated a 31 MW floating solar power plant on a rehabilitated former chalk quarry in Obourg, Belgium, now a lake.
Capacity and output
The installation has 31 MW capacity and produces about 30 GWh per year.
Purpose
The generated electricity is self-consumed by Holcim’s onsite industrial facilities; the project is identified as Europe’s largest floating solar plant dedicated to self-consumption.
Integration and connection
To minimize landscape impact, more than 700 metres of horizontal directional drilling were used to link the floating array to the electrical substation.
