Project Overview
Petrobras has selected Topsoe as the technology provider for a potential new sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blending component and renewable diesel project. The facility is planned at the Boaventura Energy Complex in Itaboraí, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Technology and Capacity
The project will utilize Topsoe’s HydroFlex® technology, along with proprietary equipment and catalysts, to process 1,000,000 tons of feedstock annually. The feedstock will include various vegetable oils, waste materials, and animal fat.
Regulatory and Investment Status
The project is subject to a final investment decision and regulatory approvals. Once operational, it is expected to be one of the largest SAF plants in Brazil.
Market Context
This initiative aligns with the growing global demand for SAF. The International Air Transport Association projects SAF production to reach 1.9 million tonnes in 2025, nearly doubling from 2024, with further growth expected in subsequent years.
