Project overview
thyssenkrupp nucera is establishing its first company-operated central Assembly Hub for electrolyzer cells in VGP Park Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, consolidating cell assembly at a single, central location.
Timeline and financing
Construction of the more than 7,500 m² building begins in winter 2026. An assembly line will be installed and cell assembly will start in 2028. thyssenkrupp nucera is investing between EUR 10 million and EUR 14 million, with approximately EUR 3.7 million in support from Portugal's COMPETE2030 program.
Operations and capacity
The Hub will use standardized, semi-automated production-line processes to increase throughput and reduce lead times compared with manual, decentralized assembly. Initially, the site will assemble cells for alkaline water electrolysis and scalum®, the standardized 20 MW unit, processing multiple cells in parallel.
Customer impact
Customers receive ready-to-install cell packages, reducing on-site planning, personnel and resource needs, while enabling closer integration of assembly and service, including ongoing operations and cell replacement.
