Técnicas Reunidas wins 932 MW Alberta power plant for META data centre

Key highlights
  • Greenlight Electricity Center LP (backed by Pembina, Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners and Kineticor) awarded the project to a Técnicas Reunidas–Aecon consortium.
  • The 932 MW combined‑cycle gas plant in Alberta will be dedicated to a large META data centre tied to an AI project costing over €8 billion.
  • Técnicas Reunidas’ scope is €570 million for engineering, procurement, commissioning and start‑up, to be executed via its TR Power subsidiary; operations are expected in H2 2030.
  • The plant is designed to incorporate carbon capture and is expandable to 1,864 MW; the award helps Técnicas Reunidas surpass €6,000 million in new contracts year‑to‑date.

Contract and project

Greenlight Electricity Center Limited Partnership (a consortium formed by Pembina Pipeline Corporation, Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners and Kineticor Asset Management) awarded a contract to a Técnicas Reunidas–Aecon consortium to develop a combined‑cycle gas power plant in Alberta. The 932 MW plant will be dedicated to supplying power to a large META data centre associated with an artificial intelligence development costing more than €8,000 million.

Scope, timing and technical features

Técnicas Reunidas’ scope is valued at €570 million and covers engineering, procurement, commissioning and start‑up, to be delivered through its TR Power subsidiary, while Aecon will carry out construction. The plant is designed to incorporate carbon capture, can be expanded to 1,864 MW, and is expected to begin operations in the second half of 2030.

Strategic fit in North America

This is Técnicas Reunidas’ first project targeting hyperscaler data centres and aligns with its SALTA Strategic Plan to increase presence in North America and grow energy activities. The award follows other regional wins—including LNG and pipeline design work—and contributes to the company surpassing €6,000 million in new contracts so far this year.

TR Power and market outlook

TR Power consolidates Técnicas Reunidas’ over 30 years of gas‑fired generation experience (more than 26 GW installed and 13 GW under construction). The company cites a €28,000 million portfolio of potential North American projects and expects TR Power to account for up to one‑third of group revenue by 2030 as data centre demand expands.
