Synkero to build commercial SAF plant in Port of Amsterdam
- Factory scheduled for completion in 2027 with a target output of 50,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel per year.
- SAF will be synthetic e‑fuel produced from CO2 and green hydrogen derived from water and renewable energy.
- Site: Port of Amsterdam, with connection to the existing kerosene pipeline to Schiphol Airport.
- Project developer Synkero is working with Port of Amsterdam, Royal Schiphol Group, SkyNRG and KLM; will link to regional initiatives such as the Hermes project.
Project
Synkero, a project development start-up, aims to build a commercial plant in the Port of Amsterdam to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The factory is scheduled for completion in 2027 and targets annual output of 50,000 tons.
Technology
The plant will produce synthetic ‘e‑fuel’ SAF by converting CO2—sourced from unavoidable industrial processes or directly from the air—in combination with green hydrogen, which is produced from water using renewable energy. The resulting SAF is a drop-in liquid fuel that can be blended with fossil kerosene with no modifications to aircraft or infrastructure.
Location and logistics
Locating the factory in the Port of Amsterdam allows use of the existing kerosene pipeline to Schiphol Airport and seeks integration with sustainable initiatives in the North Sea Canal area, including the Hermes project.
Partners and rationale
Synkero will cooperate with Port of Amsterdam, Royal Schiphol Group, SkyNRG and KLM to realise the plant. Stakeholders say SAF is essential to decarbonise aviation, and that cooperation, technical innovation and European policy are crucial; recognised challenges include technology, availability of green power and sourcing CO2.
