SPIE Belgium to deliver BoP for HybriX Energy’s Volta and Franklin 300 MWh battery parks

Project overview

SPIE Belgium has a Balance of Plant contract with HybriX Energy to deliver the electrotechnical infrastructures for the Volta (Geel-Heze) and Franklin (Massenhoven) battery parks. Together the two installations provide 300 MWh of storage, equivalent to the average daily electricity consumption of about 30,000 Belgian households.

Technical scope and schedule

Each battery energy storage system is approximately 150 MWh and includes 30 battery containers per site; jointly they can supply up to 70 MW for four hours. Both parks will connect to Elia's 150 kV transmission network. Work began in 2026 and commercial commissioning is planned for 2027.

Responsibilities and delivery model

SPIE’s BoP scope excludes the battery units and covers continuation of engineering and detailed electrotechnical design, supply and integration of high-voltage transformers, connection to the 150 kV network, medium- and high-voltage infrastructures, control and supervision system integration, testing, commissioning and operational assistance. Belgian Industry North is managing engineering and execution, Building Solutions Services North will handle maintenance, and SPIE Nederland supplies the SCADA system.

Operation and long-term support

SPIE and HybriX Energy have also signed a maintenance contract potentially spanning twenty years. The delivery follows a One SPIE cross-border model to coordinate group expertise across entities for integrated execution and long-term availability.
