RWE to build 400 MW/1,100 MWh battery at Moerdijk

Key highlights
  • Final investment decision taken for a 400 MW / 1,100 MWh lithium‑ion battery at the Moerdijk site, comprising 208 containers.
  • Battery can deliver full output for almost three hours and cover evening peak demand for around 500,000 households.
  • Commissioning is planned for the second quarter of 2028, with construction to start in due course.
  • Will be dispatched via capacity‑steering agreements with TenneT to relieve Noord‑Brabant congestion, provide inertia and other grid services, and support OranjeWind integration.

Project and technical specs

RWE has taken the final investment decision to build a 400 MW / 1,100 MWh lithium‑ion battery storage system at its Moerdijk power station. The installation will consist of 208 containers and can deliver its full 400 MW output for almost three hours.

Schedule

Construction is scheduled to start in due course and commissioning is planned for the second quarter of 2028.

Grid relief and services

The battery will connect to the national grid via the existing Moerdijk substation and be dispatched under capacity steering agreements with Transmission System Operator TenneT to relieve congestion in the Noord‑Brabant region. It is designed to free up grid capacity for parties on waiting lists and will provide advanced grid services, including instantaneous reserve (inertia). TenneT and regional operator Enexis will assess the wider grid impact, and TenneT will take the development into account in its congestion management study in December 2026. The Moerdijk site already hosts a synthetic inertia battery with 7.5 MW / 11 MWh capacity.

Role in renewables integration and RWE footprint

The battery is intended to store surplus renewable generation and supply power when needed to better align supply and demand, supporting the OranjeWind offshore project (795 MW) and technologies such as electrolysis, e‑boilers and smart charging. In the Netherlands RWE also operates a 35 MW / 41 MWh battery at Eemshaven; globally it currently operates about 1.7 GW of battery capacity with a further 3 GW under construction.
