Project Overview

RWE is advancing its largest UK battery storage project, Pembroke Battery Storage, with a final investment decision made. The project, valued at approximately £200 million, will play a crucial role in the Pembroke Net Zero Centre decarbonisation hub in South Wales.

Technical Specifications

The facility will feature a two-hour storage system with a 350 MW peak output and 700 MWh storage capacity. It will be located on a 5.1-hectare site near RWE’s Pembroke Power Station and will include 212 lithium-ion battery containers.

Timeline and Approvals

Planning consent was received in January, and the project secured a route to market through the UK Capacity Market auction. Construction is set to begin in the first half of 2026, with commissioning expected in the second half of 2028, pending an updated grid connection.

Biodiversity and Environmental Impact

The project includes biodiversity measures such as meadow planting, native woodland and scrub planting, and a new large pond to support local wildlife. These efforts aim to operate the plant in harmony with the local ecosystem.
