Perpetual Next and Air Liquide sign agreement for large-scale biomethanol production

Key highlights
  • Air Liquide will supply Rectisol™ and Lurgi™ Methanol technology to convert synthesis gas into methanol under a licence and engineering agreement.
  • Perpetual Next plans a Delfzijl plant with an annual biomethanol production capacity of 220,000 tonnes.
  • The Biomethanol Blueprint standardises torrefaction, gasification, synthesis-gas cleaning/upgrading and methanol synthesis to convert low-value organic residual streams, including waste wood.
  • Perpetual Next aims to replicate the standardised concept at multiple sites (Moerdijk, Poland, Estonia and others) to build additional industrial-scale capacity.

Agreement

Perpetual Next has concluded a license and engineering agreement with Air Liquide Engineering and Technologies for technology that converts synthesis gas into methanol. Air Liquide will supply its Rectisol™ and Lurgi™ Methanol technology for application in Perpetual Next's first biomethanol plant, with the possibility of expanding the collaboration to other production locations.

Technology and process

The Biomethanol Blueprint integrates torrefaction, gasification, cleaning and upgrading of synthesis gas, and methanol synthesis into a single, standardised production concept. The supplied technologies are designed to process synthesis gas from various sources, including biomass, enabling conversion of low-value organic residual streams, including waste wood, into biomethanol.

Scale-up and planned plant

The planned plant in Delfzijl will have an annual production capacity of 220,000 tonnes of biomethanol. Perpetual Next intends to apply the standardised Blueprint at multiple locations—Moerdijk, Poland, Estonia and other sites are cited—to deliver reproducible project execution and economies of scale and to meet growing demand for renewable methanol in the chemical industry and shipping.
