ORLEN and the Port of Gdynia Authority signed an agreement to explore the use of LNG and bioLNG as marine fuels, assessing market demand for bunkering services and infrastructure solutions to increase availability along the Polish coast.
Operational options under review
The cooperation will assess potential for waterside bunkering, including ship-to-ship operations, and examine suitability for larger vessels and the feasibility of bunkering while a vessel is alongside, also in parallel with cargo handling operations. The review will consider berth availability, operational efficiency and continuity of terminal operations.
Regulatory and market drivers
The parties will assess necessary operational conditions and regulatory requirements for developing bunkering services, and will review solutions used at other European ports. The initiative takes place against the FuelEU Maritime framework, in force since 2025, which tightens greenhouse-gas intensity requirements for onboard energy.
Strategy and long-term objective
The work forms part of ORLEN’s wider transformation of its fuel portfolio through 2035, with gas, including LNG, seen as a strategic transitional fuel while the company develops renewable fuels such as bioLNG. The partners describe the initiatives as long-term measures to help lay the foundations for an alternative marine fuels ecosystem in Poland.
