ORLEN Expands SAF Fuel Availability in Baltic Markets

Key highlights
  • ORLEN Lietuva's SAF is now available in Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn.
  • SAF can be made from used cooking oils, municipal waste, and residues.
  • EU's ReFuelEU Aviation regulation requires 2% SAF by 2025.
  • ORLEN is building an HVO facility in Płock for SAF production.

SAF Availability in Baltic Markets

Aircraft in Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn can now refuel with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This follows its introduction in Polish and Czech airports.

SAF Production and Composition

SAF is derived from feedstocks like used cooking oils, municipal waste, and residues. It is blended with conventional JET fuel, compatible with existing aircraft engines.

Regulatory Compliance

ORLEN's SAF introduction aligns with the EU's ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, which mandates a 2% sustainable fuel share by 2025 for major EU airports.

Future Developments

ORLEN is constructing a hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) facility in Płock to produce SAF domestically. Until operational, renewable components are sourced from the Netherlands and Singapore.
