OMV Petrom commissions aromatics unit at Petrobrazi
- OMV Petrom invested EUR 140 million to commission a new aromatics unit at the Petrobrazi refinery.
- The new unit has capacity of 150,000 tonnes/year of aromatics (toluene and benzene).
- Toluene production capacity at Petrobrazi will increase by 50,000 t/y to approximately 100,000 t/y.
- The unit replaces a facility from 1961 and incorporates Best Available Technologies, improving energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
Investment and capacity
OMV Petrom commissioned a new aromatics unit at the Petrobrazi refinery following an EUR 140 million investment. The unit provides 150,000 tonnes per year capacity for aromatics (toluene and benzene) and increases Petrobrazi’s toluene production capacity by 50,000 t/y to about 100,000 t/y.
Operations and technology
The unit enables separation of benzene from gasoline to support high-octane fuel production in line with European standards and expands supply of toluene as a petrochemical feedstock used in paints and adhesives. It replaces a facility that had been in operation since 1961 and incorporates Best Available Technologies, contributing to improved energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact.
Strategic context
The project is presented as a milestone in the refinery’s modernization and in optimizing the production mix toward higher value-added products. Since privatization, OMV Petrom has invested more than EUR 2 billion in Petrobrazi and is developing a further approximately EUR 750 million sustainable fuels production unit (SAF/HVO) that will include a green hydrogen component.
