MAIRE’s Nextchem awarded licensing and PDP for urea-to-DEF plant in Virginia

Key highlights
  • Nextchem (via Stamicarbon) was awarded the Licensing and Process Design Package by AdvanSix for a urea-to-DEF plant in Hopewell, Virginia.
  • Scope: 700 STPD urea melt plant using NX STAMI Urea technology, fully integrated to convert 100% of the urea melt into Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF).
  • Final Investment Decision and Notice to Proceed are targeted in H1 2027.

Project award

MAIRE's Nextchem, via licensor Stamicarbon, was awarded the Licensing and Process Design Package (PDP) by AdvanSix for a urea-to-DEF plant in Hopewell, Virginia.

Scope

The design covers a 700 short tons per day (STPD) urea melt plant using NX STAMI™ Urea technology integrated with DEF production configured to convert 100% of the urea melt into Diesel Exhaust Fluid.

Timeline

The contract is conditional on a Final Investment Decision and a Notice to Proceed, both targeted in H1 2027.

Market context

The project responds to rising DEF demand driven by tighter emission standards and wider adoption of advanced after-treatment systems in transportation; it is the first Stamicarbon application where all urea melt production may be dedicated exclusively to DEF.
