Metsä Group's Bioproduct Mill Hits 1 Million Tonnes of Pulp

Mill Operations and Capacity

Metsä Group’s bioproduct mill in Äänekoski began operations on 15 August 2017, adhering to both schedule and budget. By August 2018, the mill had reached its nominal capacity, producing over 1 million tonnes of pulp, making it the world’s largest producer of softwood market pulp.

Annual Production

The mill has an annual production capacity of 1.3 million tonnes of high-quality softwood and birch pulp. In addition to pulp, the mill produces various bioproducts, including tall oil, turpentine, and bioenergy.

Innovative Bioproducts

New bioproducts have been integrated into the mill’s portfolio, such as product gas from bark, sulphuric acid from odorous gases, biogas from wastewater sludge, and biofuel pellets. These innovations highlight the mill’s role as a platform for developing new bioproducts.

Industrial Ecosystem Expansion

The bioproduct mill is also focused on expanding the industrial ecosystem in Äänekoski. Metsä Group is actively exploring various processes and product paths, with key development projects including pulp-based lignin products and textile fibres.
