LION and SCGC develop lighter, stronger Hi CLASS gallon with specialty HDPE

Key highlights
  • SCGC formulated a specialty HDPE resin for next‑generation Personal & Home Care packaging, offering enhanced chemical resistance and structural strength.
  • Chemical Aging Tests validated the resin’s durability under demanding conditions to prevent deformation during transport.
  • i2P Center co‑designed the gallon using engineering simulation, reducing weight from 165 g to 145 g (12%).
  • The lighter design improves transport efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions by up to 25% while maintaining packaging strength and safety.

Material development

SCGC developed a specialty HDPE resin grade aimed at next‑generation Personal & Home Care packaging that offers chemical resistance and enhanced structural strength.

Design and validation

Using the i2P (Ideas to Products) Center, SCGC co‑designed the new gallon structure with LION and applied engineering simulation to optimize structural performance. Performance was validated through Chemical Aging Tests that simulate demanding usage conditions to ensure durability and resistance to deformation during transportation.

Sustainability and performance impact

The redesigned gallon reduces package weight from 165 grams to 145 grams (a 12% reduction), improving transportation efficiency and lowering carbon dioxide emissions by up to 25% while maintaining packaging strength and safety.

Commercial and industry relevance

The packaging upgrade is intended for Hi CLASS laundry liquid detergent products and aims to reduce resource consumption and environmental impact while supporting product protection across the distribution chain and aligning with both organizations’ sustainability goals.
