SCGC and ATCM pilot advanced recycling to convert used XLPE wire insulation into circular naphtha
- More than 2,000 tonnes of degraded or end-of-life XLPE wires are currently sent to landfill each year in Thailand.
- The project converts used XLPE insulation into hydrocarbon streams including circular naphtha without producing solid residue requiring disposal under tested conditions.
- The process handled both peroxide- and silane-crosslinked XLPE and a range of low-, medium- and high-voltage wires.
- Complete multilayer wire structures and mixed waste streams were processed together without prior separation, producing recoverable feedstock for petrochemicals.
Recycling challenge
Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) is widely used for wire insulation because its covalent crosslinks create a permanent three-dimensional network that resists melting and reprocessing. As a result, more than 2,000 tonnes of degraded or end-of-life XLPE wires are sent to landfill each year with no recovery route.
Collaboration and objective
SCGC and the Trade Association of Thai Cable Manufacturers (ATCM) are collaborating to explore advanced recycling that converts used XLPE insulation into hydrocarbon streams, including circular naphtha, for use as petrochemical feedstock and in recycled plastics. Produced materials are intended to meet virgin-equivalent performance and are supported by ISCC PLUS certification across the supply chain.
Testing and results
SCGC evaluated a range of used wire types: peroxide- and silane-crosslinked XLPE, low- to high-voltage wires, complete multilayer structures (insulation plus jacket) and mixed waste streams. Under tested conditions, the process converted material into circular naphtha without generating solid residue requiring further disposal.
Implications
The approach could enable manufacturers to reclassify crosslinked scrap from disposal cost to a recoverable material stream that serves as feedstock for petrochemical production and high-quality recycled plastics under SCGC GREEN POLYMER™.
