ITM Power and DB Systemtechnik to partner on green hydrogen for transport
- ITM Power and DB Systemtechnik have signed a Letter of Intent to develop, pilot and test green energy solutions for transport and critical infrastructure.
- The collaboration builds on an agreement between ITM Power and Deutsche Bahn from March 2025 to work on sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions.
- Partners will explore deploying green hydrogen for rail decarbonisation and related mobility — including locomotives, buses and trucks — and improving energy resilience of railway infrastructure.
- The initial step is a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study to assess technical configuration, site integration, operational requirements and the commercial framework for ITM's electrolysers at Deutsche Bahn sites.
Partnership scope
ITM Power plc and DB Systemtechnik GmbH have signed a Letter of Intent to form an innovation and research partnership focused on developing, piloting and testing green energy solutions for the transport and critical infrastructure sectors. The collaboration will investigate the use of green hydrogen to support decarbonisation across rail transport and associated mobility solutions, including locomotive, bus and truck fleets, as well as the energy resilience needs of railway infrastructure.
Initial workstream
As an initial step the parties intend to undertake a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study. The FEED will assess the technical configuration, site integration, operational requirements and commercial framework for potential applications of ITM's electrolyser technology at Deutsche Bahn sites.
Context and leadership comments
The agreement builds on a March 2025 collaboration between ITM Power and Deutsche Bahn on sustainable transportation and infrastructure solutions. ITM Power CEO Dennis Schulz described the FEED study as an important progression in the companies' relationship and a recognition of green hydrogen's potential in decarbonising transport infrastructure. DB Systemtechnik CEO Dr. Hiie-Mai Unger said the study will provide insights into integrating green hydrogen to strengthen decarbonisation and operational resilience across the DB network.
