ITM Power awarded £46.5m DESNZ grant for Chronos manufacturing

Funding
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has formally awarded a £46.5m grant, first announced on 9 April 2026. The grant is accompanied by a £40m equity investment from Great British Energy to support establishment of operational manufacturing capability for the Chronos electrolyser stack.
Manufacturing plan
The Chronos line is planned within existing Sheffield facilities, leveraging current manufacturing expertise, infrastructure and production processes introduced to the Trident line. This approach is intended to reduce execution risk while enabling a scalable, high-throughput platform.
Capacity and equipment
The project targets bespoke, automated production equipment required for 1 GW of annual production capacity. Planned investments include catalyst-coated membrane production, electrode welding, specialist coating applications, stack assembly lines and cleanroom infrastructure to support efficient, high-quality output.
Operational readiness
Operational readiness and product quality will be supported by in-house production of modular test systems and acquisition of required validation materials to enable a robust and efficient manufacturing ramp-up.
