Deutsche Bahn AG

About Deutsche Bahn

Deutsche Bahn AG (Deutsche Bahn, or DB) is Germany’s state-owned rail company headquartered in Berlin. Formed in 1994, it operates passenger and freight rail services and manages much of the country’s rail infrastructure and stations through subsidiaries such as DB Netz, DB Station & Service, DB Regio, DB Fernverkehr, DB Cargo, and DB Energie. DB is wholly owned by the Federal Republic of Germany.

For the chemical industry, DB provides rail freight solutions across Europe via DB Cargo, transporting bulk and specialty chemicals, petrochemicals, and other hazardous materials under RID safety regulations. It serves major chemical parks and ports, offers tank-wagon and intermodal services, and connects industrial sidings to international corridors, supporting reliable, large-scale, and lower-emission logistics compared with road transport. DB Energie supplies traction power via Germany’s dedicated 16.7 Hz railway electricity network and supports energy efficiency and alternative traction initiatives. The company is piloting battery and hydrogen-powered trains and other technologies aimed at decarbonizing rail operations, developments that can further reduce the logistics footprint of chemical supply chains.
