- The MultiPLHY project has started the world's largest multi-megawatt high-temperature electrolyzer at Neste's Rotterdam refinery.
- The electrolyzer, based on SOEC technology, operates at 850°C and produces over 60 kg of renewable hydrogen per hour.
- Consortium partners include Neste, Sunfire, CEA, and ENGIE, with Sunfire providing the electrolyzer and SMS group the hydrogen processing unit.
- The project is funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program.

Project Overview
The MultiPLHY project has achieved a significant milestone by starting up the world's largest multi-megawatt high-temperature electrolyzer at Neste's renewable products refinery in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. This pilot project aims to demonstrate the viability of renewable hydrogen in reducing fossil hydrogen use in the refining industry.
Technology and Efficiency
The electrolyzer, based on Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell (SOEC) technology by Sunfire, operates at high temperatures of 850°C and produces over 60 kg of renewable hydrogen per hour. Utilizing heat, it requires significantly less electricity compared to other market solutions, enhancing energy efficiency.
Consortium and Roles
The project is a collaboration between Neste, Sunfire, CEA, and ENGIE. Sunfire provides the high-temperature electrolyzer, while SMS group supplies the hydrogen processing unit. Neste is responsible for refinery integration and operation, with CEA coordinating the project and ENGIE handling the techno-economic assessment.
Funding and Support
This initiative has received funding from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, with support from Hydrogen Europe and Hydrogen Europe Research.
