Hynetwork Connects First Hydrogen Plant to Dutch Network

Key highlights
  • The 200 MW Holland Hydrogen 1 plant connects to the Dutch hydrogen network at Rotterdam Maasvlakte.
  • The first 32 kilometers of hydrogen pipeline were completed and filled with green hydrogen earlier this year.
  • The hydrogen pipeline runs parallel to the A15, within an existing energy corridor.
  • The hydrogen and CO2 pipelines are 40 centimeters apart over a 19-kilometer stretch.

Connection to Dutch Hydrogen Network

Gasunie subsidiary Hynetwork has connected the first hydrogen plant to the Dutch hydrogen network. The connection, known as the 'golden weld,' links the 200 MW Holland Hydrogen 1 plant at Rotterdam Maasvlakte to the hydrogen pipeline. This marks the first direct connection of a green hydrogen producer to the national infrastructure, advancing the decarbonization of industry in the Netherlands and northwestern Europe.

Pipeline Development

The connection follows the completion of the first 32 kilometers of hydrogen pipeline earlier this year, which was filled with green hydrogen and pressurized. Constructed by Hynetwork, the pipeline largely runs parallel to the A15 within an existing energy corridor, where other key infrastructures, such as the CO2 pipeline for the Porthos project, are also located.

Collaboration with Porthos

The development of this hydrogen pipeline route involved close collaboration with the Porthos project. Over a 19-kilometer stretch, the hydrogen and CO2 pipelines are only 40 centimeters apart. Coordination between Hynetwork, Porthos, and construction partners HANAB and Denys was crucial for resolving issues and ensuring safety.

Future Expansion

This initial connection is a significant step towards developing a national hydrogen network. Plans are in place to expand the infrastructure by adding new producers and consumers, aiming to create a national and eventually international network connecting industrial clusters in northwestern Europe.
