Milestone Achieved

The final weld of a 32-kilometer hydrogen pipeline in Rotterdam was completed in mid-August, marking a significant milestone. This pipeline is the first section of the national hydrogen network, setting the stage for the Port of Rotterdam to become a major energy gateway for Europe, connecting to Germany, Belgium, and the rest of the Netherlands.

Construction Challenges

Construction began in April 2024 after several years of preparation. The route through the Rotterdam port area had to navigate a dense landscape of roads, railways, waterways, and hundreds of existing pipes and cables. At intersections, the pipeline sometimes had to pass beneath 20 or more operational pipes and cables, making it a complex operation.

Next Steps

With the welding complete, the next phase involves testing, pre-commissioning, commissioning, and preparing the pipeline for operation. These steps are crucial to ensure the pipeline's readiness and integration into the broader energy network.
